Looking after your jewellery

How to store your jewellery

In order to protect your jewellery, it is usually best to hang it up. This way your necklaces will not be tangled together, and it also means that it is easier for you to browse through your jewellery to find the perfect accessories for your outfit!

It is also important to store different metals separately to avoid possible chemical reactions which could discolour your jewellery. By storing your jewellery in an organized fashion you avoid losing small earrings and rings in the clutter of your bedroom. Inexpensive jewellery displays can be found at accessory stores in the shopping mall or you can make your own one using a beautiful piece of fabric and wall hooks.

Wearing and removing your jewellery:

It is important that you take your jewellery off when you bathe and go to sleep. In that way, you will not scratch yourself or your partner in sleeping. It also prevents the metal from stretching and breaking. It is essential to remove your rings and earrings before having your hair styled because chemicals in colouring agents can cause permanent damage to both precious metals and gems.

You should also avoid wearing your jewellery in swimming in a swimming pool, hot tub or in the sea. Chlorine and salt water can damage and discolour your jewellery.

Putting your jewellery on should be the last part of your routine in order to avoid covering it with lotions and makeup. Be sure to spray perfume and let it dry before you adorn yourself with jewels. This is especially important for pearls, whose delicate luster can be deteriorated by the chemicals in many beauty products.

How to clean your jewellery with care

  • Most jewellery can be easily cleaned with a mild soap and water solution and a soft brush.
  • Avoid cleaners that contain abrasives, as even gentle ones like toothpaste can damage soft metals and gemstones.
  • Rubbing your jewellery with a soft chamois cloth is a great way to restore the shine and lustre of precious metals.
  • Avoid using hard objects to clean stone settings, excessive force could damage your jewellery. Use a soft brush instead.
  • Don’t soak pearl strands or other necklaces with knotted strands. Soaking weakens and stretches knotting fibbers
  • As obvious as it sounds – remember to put the plug in the basin before cleaning earrings and rings!
